Open Letter: Show Up & Cheer On Penn State Gymnastics

Penn State gymnastics puts on some of the most exciting competitions you can watch on campus. It’s intense, competitive, and way more fun than people expect. There’s constant action, with routine after routine showcasing high-level skill. These athletes are insanely talented, and they make every move look effortless (even though it definitely isn’t).

Men’s and women’s gymnastics take an unreal amount of skill, strength, and discipline. These student-athletes are putting in countless hours of training for routines that last about a minute. They’re doing it in front of half-empty stands far too often

One of the best parts about a gymnastics meet is the variety of events. On the men’s side, the Nittany Lions compete on floor exercise, pommel horse, still rings, vault, parallel bars, and high bar. On the women’s side, Penn State competes on vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise. All of these events display explosive power, control, and strength in an exciting performance. Seeing the personal touches each athlete adds to their routines helps the audience resonate with their story.

Gymnastics meets also bring a uniquely fun, high-energy atmosphere. Fans cheer for all athletes’ performances, regardless of the team. While competitive, the supportive camaraderie that is shown is refreshing.

Even better? Admission is free for students. Free. You can grab your friends, walk to Rec Hall, and watch elite-level athletes compete without spending a single dollar. There’s no excuse not check it out.

While women’s gymnastics does not have any remaining home meets this season, the Big Ten Championships will kick off on March 20, from Champaign, Illinois. Tune in!

As for the men’s team, Penn State will take on Ohio State in Rec Hall on Sunday, March 22. Take the time to check out these hard-working athletes as they prepare for postseason championship runs.

We love to talk about school spirit. We show up in the fall for football and in the winter for hockey. Gymnastics deserves that same energy. These athletes are giving everything they have to represent Penn State. Let’s start giving them a crowd that matches their effort.
