Penn State Men’s Hockey’s Gavin McKenna Named February HCA National Rookie Of The Month

Penn State men’s hockey superstar forward Gavin McKenna received Hockey Commissioners Association National Rookie of the Month honors for February.
McKenna’s record-shattering month featured 14 points in six games played, including two goals and 12 assists. He most notably recorded an eight-point performance against Ohio State on February 20, when he tallied a whopping 7 apples en route to a Penn State victory. Eight points was the most any player in the NCAA had achieved in 39 seasons. The forward’s February point-per-game mark of 2.33 led the nation, with his point total being the highest in the Big Ten.
In addition to McKenna’s personal successes, the team greatly benefited from some clutch moments courtesy of the freshman forward. His shootout winner against Notre Dame helped the Nittany Lions secure an extra point in the Big Ten standings, and his overtime winner against the Buckeyes cemented a sweep the week prior.
McKenna also finished the month of February on a five-game point streak and passed Aiden Fink’s single-season program assist record, now sitting at 33. He leads the conference in scoring with 36 points in Big Ten play and was named a Hobey Baker Award finalist.
No. 72 will return to the ice tonight, Friday, March 5, for the penultimate game of the regular season against the Wisconsin Badgers. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m. at Pegula Ice Arena.
