Staff Picks: Baseball Walk-Up Songs

If there’s one thing that always remains memorable at a baseball game, it’s a player’s walk-up song blasting around Medlar Field at Lubrano Park before they step up to the plate.
From country to pop to rap, a player’s hype-up song can determine the outcome at the plate. Over the years at Medlar Field, Penn State baseball fans have heard some iconic songs, including “Where Have You Been” by Rihanna and “Paradise City” by Guns N’ Roses.
While the Penn State baseball players have certainly picked some great hits to hype the crowd, we challenged our staffers to step up to the plate and pick their own hype song.
Sarah Nasif: ‘4 Raws’ – Esdeekid
It might be a popularized TikTok song, but I think it is the best walk-up song that gets you locked in, hyped up, that little boost of confidence, and of course, swag.
Tessa Torres-Hoffman: ‘Timeless’ – Weekend & Playboi Carti
My walk-up song would be “Timeless” by the Weekend and Playboi Carti, only because that was Boston Red Sox’s Jarren Duran’s walk-up song last season, and he’s my favorite baseball player. More specifically, start at 1:38 for the walkup. But if I were to choose a country song as another option, I would do “Courtesy of Red, White and Blue” by Toby Keith, and I think that song speaks for itself.
Holden Mostofsky: ‘Had Enough’ – Don Toliver feat. Quavo & Offset
“Had Enough” has been one of my personal favorite songs ever since it was released, and is a great feel-good song to walk up to. It’s a smooth track, but it has a hard-hitting beat drop to feel confident and in control. The beginning has a slow rhythm, but the song quickly picks up the pace. When taking the first few steps up to home plate, I’d want to feel calm and collected. But then, as soon as I step into the batter’s box, I’d want to feel confident that I’m going to launch the ball. Starting at 18 seconds into the song, it will play the last two lines Don Toliver sings before the beat drops. Those lines would build hype for me and for the crowd. When the beat drops, it brings a hard-hitting energy. But it’s still a track that has a bright and vibrant sound. “Had Enough” has a strong buildup and an uplifting feeling for anyone listening, making it a great pick for a walk-up song.
Tia Kaschauer: ‘Low’ – Flo Rida
Because the whole club (Medlar Field) will be looking at me walking up to bat. Prepare yourself, I’m about to get low, low, low, low, low, low, low, low sliding into first base.
Melanie Thalhimer: ‘Thunderstruck’ – AC/DC
There’s truly nothing quite like the opening chords of this major hit to sending the crowd into a frenzy. Hearing this song blasted around Medlar Field would sure give me the spark to hit some big home runs and even a grand slam or two.
Jessica Farhat: ‘Downtown’ – Macklemore
I can’t think of a better walk-up song than “Downtown,” can you? It is a universally loved song that always gets me out of a funk. It contains every aspect of a good tune, and it’s going to get me in the zone to hit some home runs.
Lyndsay Camp: ‘Dog Days Are Over’ – Florence & The Machine
Happy. Upbeat. Fun. Perfect for any mood, any feeling. Down a couple of runs? Boost of motivation. Dominating 11-0? Pure joy. Just the best song to hear at the plate to get loose and feel the vibes. It is also genuinely an incredible song that I never get tired of hearing, like ever.
Emily Bonavita: ‘Hot Wings (I Wanna Party)’ – will.i.am, Jamie Foxx, Anna Hathaway
Cringey or not, I am obsessed with this song, and it always gets me hype. Hearing this song played in Medlar would get me ready to fly through the bases.
Sean Regenye: ‘The Rubberband Man’ – The Spinners
This actually was my walk-up song sophomore year in high school, and it was my favorite of the three I had through school ball. While a lot of people choose their walk-up songs as something to get them hyped, my idea was to stay loose and have fun —the best mindset to have approaching the plate.
Christian Gresko: ‘These Walls’ – Kendrick Lamar
Believe it or not, I didn’t choose “Heartache Medication” by Jon Pardi.
