Penn State Men’s Lacrosse Prepares For Defining Big Ten Stretch Following Loss

After stacking back-to-back wins, Penn State men’s lacrosse suffered its first loss since February. The Nittany Lions dropped a hard-fought battle against North Carolina, 10-8. The Tarheels maintained the lead throughout the entire contest, notching at least one goal in each period. The consistent pressure prevented Penn State from ever settling into a rhythm offensively.

Penn State entered this game without its star scorer, Hunter Aquino. The sophomore has been battling through some minor injuries he suffered during practice earlier in the season. In his absence, the Nittany Lions were looking for others to step in and fill his shoes. Against North Carolina, Jack Iannantuono, Andrew Beard, and Chase Robertson all recorded two goals. Although Beard and Iannantuono are only freshman, they have both found early-season success despite their inexperience.

Following the matchup against Yale, Iannantuono was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week. In the contest, he racked up two goals and four assists, playing a key part in the 17-7 victory over the Bulldogs. Through seven games, he has 11 goals and 11 assists, earning more playing time with each game. In previous weeks, Head Coach Jeff Tambroni described Iannantuono as the quarterback of the offense, consistently making all the guys around him better. With the length of Aquino’s absence unknown, guys like Iannantuono and Beard will need to stay active for Penn State to succeed.

While the offense had mild success, the Nittany Lions struggled in a different area where they usually excel. Since the beginning of the season, Penn State has been superb at the face-off stripe, regularly dominating offensive possessions, but against the Tarheels, it was a different story. Unlike Penn State, North Carolina opts to use only one face-off man throughout an entire game. Junior Brady Wambach won 14 of 22 opportunities, outscoring Penn State 14-8 at the stripe, flipping the script on the Nittany Lions.

Although the struggles at the face-off stripe may have come as a surprise, the issues with turnovers did not. Penn State suffered 18 turnovers in the contest, bringing its season average up to 21 per game. While the Nittany Lions rank second in the Big Ten conference in turnovers with 148, their next opponent ranks last. Maryland presents the first true test of the 2026 season, as it marks the first conference matchup.

Maryland is 3-3 overall on the season, but will enter this weekend’s matchup carrying a two-game win streak. Even though the Terrapins have suffered three losses this year, they have all come against high-level opponents. In the three-game skid, they lost to No. 2 Syracuse, No. 12 Princeton, and No. 1 Notre Dame. With another ranked matchup on the horizon, leading scorer Leo Johnson will need to find his rhythm. Johnson is a graduate student and leads Maryland with 17 goals on the season. Although the Terrapins rank last in the Big Ten in goals, their experience will present a challenge for a Penn State defense that has shown holes. As Big Ten opponents, the two teams meet on a yearly basis, often carrying top-ten rankings.

Last season, the Nittany Lions made the trip to Maryland, losing 13-8. In the loss, Penn State was led in scoring by Kyle Lehman, with two goals. Through seven games, Lehman leads the team in scoring with 15 goals. Lehman will need to step up against a familiar face if the team wants to get back on track following the loss to North Carolina.

When Penn State takes the field on Saturday, it will mark the beginning of a five-game stretch against Big Ten opponents. After facing No. 10 Maryland, the Nittany Lions will also face Ohio State and John Hopkins, both ranked within the top 15. To find success in this challenging stretch of games, they will need to be prepared for all situations, especially if Hunter Aqunio is unavailable.

Depth and discipline will be critical as the Nittany Lions navigate a slate filled with experienced and highly ranked opponents. Ultimately, the next few weeks will define whether Penn State is a championship-caliber team.
