No. 1 Luke Lilledahl got the day started for the Nittany Lions, as he wrestled No. 8 Dean Peterson of Iowa for the third time this season. The match started slowly, with no points being scored in the first period. Peterson escaped quickly to start the second. That would be all the points scored going into the third, as both wrestlers continued to feel each other out with little offensive action.
Lilledahl also escaped quickly after starting on the bottom in the third period. The Nittany Lion got hold of Peterson’s leg but was unable to convert for a takedown. Peterson continued to show great scrambling, keeping the match at 1-1 going into sudden victory.
Lilledahl controlled most of the sudden victory, having a hold of the Hawkeye’s right leg for most of the period. There was a review to see if Lilledahl scored a takedown as time expired, but it wasn’t awarded.
In the tiebreakers, Lilldahl escaped in just 11 seconds and held on top for the entire 30 seconds to move on to the semifinals with a 2-1 decision win. Lilledahl also becomes an All-American for the second time.
