Looking At Potential Lady Lions Portal Targets

Penn State women’s basketball had nine players enter the transfer portal this offseason.

Every player from the Lady Lions with eligibility is now gone. The team is in much need of recruits and new players from the transfer portal.

New head coach Tanish Wright is left with an empty roster for the new season. Here are some players who could be strong targets for the Lady Lions:

Justice Carlton

The sophomore forward from Texas entered the transfer portal with two years of eligibility remaining.

Justice Carlton’s energy and dominance on the court have been very effective for the Longhorns this season. She’s a great playmaker and could take a leadership role for Penn State, becoming a star and taking over the team.

She averaged 8.5 points, 0.9 assists, and 4.0 rebounds while shooting 53% from the field. Her season high was 21 points against UT Rio Grande Valley.

Carlton’s ceiling is yet to be reached, and the possibility of her reaching that could be taking a lead role for the Lady Lions.

Madison St. Rose

Madison St. Rose has one year of eligibility left, and there are plenty of spots for her on Penn State’s roster.

This past year was a breakout season for St. Rose, with more efficient shooting and confidence. She has strong rebounding and is good from mid-range.

Last season at Princeton, she averaged 15.8 points, 2,2 assists, and 4.5 rebounds while shooting 47.9% from the field. She was a huge part of the Princeton team this past season, and her talents could be very useful at Penn State.

She could take an even bigger step by playing in the Big Ten and showcasing her skillset at the highest level.

Zahira Walton

Zahira Walton entered the transfer portal after a strong season at George Mason and one year of eligibility remaining.

She knows how to find her way to the basket with an elite scoring skillset. She is great in a one-on-one match-up and drives well to the rim.

She averaged 18.1 points, 2.1 assists, and 6.1 rebounds while shooting 40.8% from the field. She had a season high of 42 points against Murray State despite losing the game.

Walton could be a massive offensive weapon for the Lady Lions for a year to get back on track.

Tilda Trygger

Tilda Trygger is a 6’6″ center from Sweden and was a key player for NC State. She has two years of eligibility left, which would be great for long-term success at Penn State.

Trygger is a great rebounder, but also brings a diverse set of skills. She has a decent three-point shot and can create separation when driving.

She averaged 10.6 points, 1.2 assists, and seven rebounds while shooting 51.8% from the field. She had a season high of 25 points against Boston College, where the team scored over 100 points.

Kaylene Smikle

Kaylene Smikle, who played guard at Maryland, entered the portal and would be a great local pick-up. She has two years of eligibility left and is familiar with Big Ten playstyle.

Smikle is a great shooter and finisher at the basket. She is an All-Big Ten first-team player and would be a key focus if she played at Penn State.

She averaged 13.1 points, 1.6 assists, and 3.9 rebounds while shooting 44.4% from the field. She had a season high of 22 points against Kentucky before getting injured.

Despite coming off an injury, Smikle could be a great fit for Penn State and continue to compete at the highest level.

With all players with eligibility entering the transfer portal, the team needs new additions. With so many open spots available, the Lady Lions have the opportunity to completely rebuild their team. A bright future could be ahead under Wright, but recruitment is a key focus for the team right now.
