UPUA Approves Funding For Major Student Events

The 21st Assembly of the University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) met Wednesday to discuss student initiatives, confirm leadership positions, and pass several pieces of legislation supporting campus organizations.

The meeting opened with presentations from the South Asian Student Association (SASA) and the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA), followed by a discussion on budget adjustments for the 2026-27 academic year.

The assembly then moved into confirmations and swearing-in of new leadership. Amber Sheppard was confirmed as Executive Director of Internal Inclusion and Support, alongside Chief Justice Jude York, Executive Director of Sustainability Julia Simon, and Parliamentarian Sarah Beaver. All were approved through an anonymous vote and officially sworn into their positions.

New Business

In new business, the assembly unanimously passed Policy #01-20, approving the UPUA budget for the 2026–27 fiscal year. The organization will continue operating with an annual allocation of $139,628.55, which will be distributed across various initiatives aimed at improving undergraduate student life.

UPUA also passed several funding bills to support cultural and student-led events across campus.

Bill #01-21 allocated $1,500 to co-sponsor the South Asian Student Association’s annual Holi celebration in collaboration with the Student Programming Association and Bollywood Club. The event, known for drawing over 1,000 students, will feature cultural activities, performances, and interactive attractions.

Bill #02-21 approved funding support for the Multicultural Greek Council Showcase, an annual event highlighting culturally significant performances such as stepping, strolling, and saluting. The showcase is scheduled to take place during Greek Week and is open to all students.

Bill #03-21 granted $1,000 to the African Student Association for its annual “Touch of Africa” event. The program celebrates the diversity of African cultures through music, fashion, and cuisine, and continues to grow as one of the organization’s largest events.

Finally, Bill #04-21 allocated $595.94 to support the National Association of Black Accountants’ 18th Annual Fashion Show. The event, expected to host up to 1,000 attendees, provides a platform for student designers, artists, and entrepreneurs while promoting professional development through event planning experience.

All pieces of legislation introduced during the meeting passed unanimously with a 28-0-0 vote.
