No Refund Theatre Presents: ‘Cabaret’

Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome! No Refund Theatre’s (NRT) final show for the semester is “Cabaret,” the classic musical with book by Joe Masteroff, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and music by John Kander, based on the novel “Goodbye to Berlin” by Christopher Isherwood. The NRT production is directed by Elena Bishop.

“Cabaret” is a surreal, sexy, hilarious, and sad story about an American author (Clifford Bradshaw, played by Glendon Rugova) who moves to Berlin in the years before the Second World War to finish his novel. In the jazzy underworld of the city, Clifford ends up at the Kit Kat Klub. He meets Sally Bowles, a dancer and hopeful movie star, played by Maylin Alvarez.

The story progresses with equal measures of happiness and sadness, colored by the deep red lights of the Kit Kat Klub and the bright, bloody red that comes with the rise of the Nazis. All of this mayhem is spectacularly controlled by the night’s emcee, portrayed by Mahdi Bdairi. And, of course, the Kit Kat girls.

As usual with NRT, the production is beautiful. The choreography is beautiful, the sets are beautiful, the actors are beautiful. Even the orchestra is beautiful. Each number is more exciting, more entertaining, more racy than the last, and I loved every minute of it. The cast and crew were able to give Forum 111 new life, to the point that you can quickly forget what the room is used for during the day.

NRT will perform “Cabaret” in Forum 111 from April 23 to 25 at 8 p.m.
