Penn State Hoops Hires Dwayne Stephens As Assistant Coach

Penn State men’s basketball has hired Dwayne Stephens as an assistant coach, the team announced on Tuesday.

Before joining the Nittany Lions’ coaching staff, Stephens began as an assistant coach at Oakland University from 1990 to 1997. He then spent four seasons at Marquette as an assistant coach and 19 seasons at Michigan State as an assistant and associate coach.

He worked under long-time head coach Tom Izzo, who has brought the Spartans to 28 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, eight Final Four appearances, and a national championship.

Stephens then became the head coach at Western Michigan for four seasons, posting a record of 42-84.

During his playing career at Michigan State, he averaged 7.3 points, 2.1 assists, and 4.4 rebounds. He appeared in 122 total games and was named to the honorable mention All-Big Ten his junior year. Stephens made three NCAA Tournament appearances as a player and reached the Sweet Sixteen his freshman year.
