State Legislature Approves Budget for 2010-2011

Earlier today the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives approved the state budget for the 2010-2011 fiscal year. The new $28,043,137 budget trims almost a billion dollars from Governor Ed Rendell's proposed budget of $29,029,507. The new budget is an increase of over $243 million from last year's much delayed bill. In fact, this is the first time in Ed Rendell's 8 years as governor that the state budget has been approved on time. But the big question that the Penn State faithful want to know is, how will this new budget impact Old State?

Cornell Lax Coach to Join Nittany Lions

Former Cornell University Men's Lacrosse coach Jeff Tambroni has become the newest member of Penn State Athletics. In the 10 years that Tambroni was the head coach of the the Big Red, he led his team to a record of 109-40, eight Ivy League Championships, and three NCAA Final Four appearances. Under his tenure, Cornell shot to the forefront of college lacrosse and became a national powerhouse. Tambroni's departure from Cornell was a complete shock to many, including his star player at Cornell Rob Pannell, who told the Elmira Star Gazette that he was "kind of in shock a little bit. Kind of upset, but coach Tambroni, he has his reasons for doing it. I'm behind him and support his decision."

University to Re-File Right-To-Know Report

Last week we reported on the possibility that Penn State had misfiled its Right-To-Know report, a document required by the Commonwealth. The main issue at hand has to do with a section of the report that asks if any family member of a trustee or board member received over $10,000 in compensation from the University. Penn State answered "yes" but failed to acknowledge who might fall into that category.

After getting an earful from Left of Centre, the University has announced that it will be refiling the report to include the names of those omitted.

University to Take Action in Attempt to Curb Drinking Problem

Following a trend of high-profile incidents involving alcohol abuse last year. Both the University and the Borough of State College are looking at ways to reduce the number of trips to the emergency room endured by Penn State Students. The University is preparing to change the way it administers alcohol education while the town is looking at adding more bathrooms downtown and possibly increasing fines for summary offenses. The moves look to have significant impact on students for the upcoming year.

THON Announces Major Dates for 2010-2011

Last night, the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon released the dates for THON Weekend, the THON 5K, and the four canning weekends. Communications Overall Elaine Tanella sent an email out to THON volunteers announcing the dates. This year's THON Weekend will take place February 18-20, and the first canning weekend will be October 22-24.

Men’s Golf Team Qualifies for NCAA Finals

For the second time in three years, the Penn State Men's Golf team is headed to the NCAA Finals, following a 4th place finish at the East Regional Qualifying tournament. Seniors T.J. Howe and Kevin Foley led the team finishing tied for first and fourth, respectively.


The team carded a 3-under-par, 837 over three rounds (277-283-277) and finished just two strokes behind Kent State and Texas, who tied for first.


Finals will be in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Find out what the Penn State coach had to say about the team's next tournament after the jump.
