About the Author

Michael Berton

I grew up in a Philly suburb, then moved to a different one. I am now at Penn State, where I can actually sate my giant appetite for sports. Other than writing, I also play the cello in the Penn State Philharmonic.

Anna Baltzer to Speak Tomorrow

Anna Baltzer, an award winning lecturer and a Jewish-American activist for Palestinian human rights, will be speaking at Penn State on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in the Thomas Building.

Baltzer, who recently appeared on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (see below), has been to over 400 places around the world with her presentation "Life in Occupied Palestine: Eyewitness Stories and Photos." She has also written a book, entitled "Witness in Palestine: A Jewish American Woman in the Occupied Territories."

She is the granddaughter of Holocaust refugees and is a volunteer for the International Women's Peace Service in the West Bank. Baltzer's work and reputation earned her the Arab-American Anti-Discrimination Committee's Rachel Corrie Peace and Justice award, as well as a commendation from the governor of Wisconsin.

A long-time supporter of non-violent resistance to occupation of Palestine, Batlzer is part of many groups that support peace and freedom. If the interview on The Daily Show is any indication, it should be an interesting talk about a topic that has been affecting people around the world for a very long time.

Joe Paterno Spring Press Conference

In his usual reticent manner, Joe Paterno told the media on Wednesday that he did not really have any answers as to how the football team will look in the fall.

Paterno said, "I think this press conference is ridiculous."

He did tell the media almost apologetically that the reason that he could not give any information was because he and his staff still do not know who will fill in at certain positions. In fact, the only positions that seem certain right now are center, place kicker, and running back.

Paterno did give some information out, including that Drew Astorino is banged up and that Brandon Beachum will not do any work this spring due to his knee injury sustained last fall. He also said that he is looking at Chaz Powell on defense and that punting is a high priority this off-season.

"We've got to do better on punt coverage," he said.

Drinking Age Debate

The Center for Democratic Deliberation (CDD) will be hosting its first annual spring parliamentary debate on Wednesday, March 31 at 7 p.m. in 104 Thomas.

The debate will be about the current drinking age and whether it should be changed or not. Three speakers will represent each side of the issue, and audience members will be allowed to participate in the discussion. The three in favor of the current drinking age will act as the government, while the other three will represent the opposition in a parliamentary style hearing.

Rotelli To Host Leukemia Benefit Dinner

Rotelli will be hosting a pizza and pasta dinner supporting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society(LLS) on Sunday, March 28 from 5-7 p.m. Ten percent of each dinner purchased will be donated to this society through "Team in Training", a team racing in the New Jersey Marathon that is also sponsored by the LLS. This team has been around for 21 years and has raised over $1 billion for the LLS.

LLS was founded in 1949 as The de Villiers Foundation and is almost 1 million volunteers strong. These volunteers are helping to combat all forms of blood cancer. It is a tough fight, as 9.5 percent of the 1.5 million new cases of cancer each year consist of lymphoma, leukemia, and myeloma.

The event is being hosted by Bill Brinkman, a senior majoring in Security and Risk Analysis. His mother was diagnosed with stage 2 non-Hodgkins lymphoma, which has inspired him to make a difference here at Penn State.

For those interested in attending, a flyer must be presented at the dinner, which is conveniently situated next to this post!

Public Relations Society to Host Fashion Show

Fashionistas rejoice! It is time for the second annual Spring Fashion Show hosted by the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) on March 24 at 7 p.m. at Café 210 West.

This year, March Fadness will feature items from local and national brands. A portion of the proceeds will go to The Prom Attire Event. This group saves and recycles gently used prom dresses. Tickets are $5 and you must be at least 21 years old to enter.

Four Players Leave Men’s Basketball Team

If the men's basketball team plans on playing post-season ball next year, it will have to do so without Chris Babb, Bill Edwards, Andrew Ott and Adam Highberger.

Ott and Highberger are foregoing their final seasons to pursue various school ventures, but Babb and Edwards are transferring.

I do not mean to diminish the importance of Ott and Highberger, but the more distressing news is that Babb and Edwards have left. Babb was one of the more consistent players on the team, and one of the few that could hit a three-pointer. Edwards did not provide as much as hoped for this season, but he definitely had great potential. He had size and athleticism. Both players will be sorely missed next season.

What do these developments really mean? Read on after the jump to find out.
