UPUA Opens Office, Regrets Decision?

Gavin Keirans & Co. have had an unprecedentedly successful year with UPUA, but it seems that there is concern that our student government is being too productive. UPUA’s new downtown office opened a week ago, and Keirans and several other leaders have said the project was handled improperly from the outset. Last year, UPUA found […]

Found on Craigslist – Missed Connections

Craigslist is a big, and sometimes scary, place. Craigslist Penn State is no exception. In an effort to better serve you, our reader, we have started an new effort to highlight listings we feel should be shared with the greater Penn State audience.

We hope we can find what you're looking for.

To the girl that found my book - m4w - 20 (PSU)

This is probably a long shot but I feel the need to address what happened today.

I appreciate that you found my book and called the number to give it back to me. When I saw you walking up with it I was awestruck by your beauty. Usually I don't run away from beautiful girls but.. I just couldn't control my reaction. I'm sorry I turned and ran away, subsequently falling down a staircase. I also am aware it may look like I soiled myself shortly after falling down the stairs but this was not the case, I was carrying Hershey's chocolate bars in my back pocket and became very sweaty and hot when I saw you and they were probably crushed while I fell down the stairs. This is the best explanation.. of course the other is that I actually did soil myself which is not entirely impossible but it's been a few weeks since that's happened otherwise so it seems unlikely.

Er.. anyway, I really do need my book back. I promise if you meet up to give it to me I won't run away or shit all over the place this time.

If not can you please email me questions 2 - 15 and question 17 for Chapter 1? Thanks.

I totally feel for you man, this is how I react every time I see an attractive girl on campus. Like a deranged lemming, I just make a beeline for the nearest stairwell and throw myself down it.

Songwriters FTK

Penn State's Songwriters Club will be hosting an concert next Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. in Heritage Hall in the HUB to benefit THON. The concert will feature several members of the club playing original songs with a few covers thrown in for good measure. Tickets will be $5 in advance, $6 at the door, and all the proceeds will go to THON.

The concert will feature six acts including the "motive core new age alternative rock persuasion" bands A Day Without Love and In Other News, acoustic guitarists Jeremy Fretz (which, awesomely, is his actual name) and Maura Westerlund, rock duo Patrick Troester and Isaac Bishop, and Funk band West of Babylon.

If you're interested in going, advance tickets will be sold in Pollock Commons February 1-2 and in Waring Commons February 3-4. I got a chance to hear several members of this club last November at their Open Mic Night, and I'm guessing the concert will be worth the donation. Worst case scenario, you kill two hours before you can go out Friday and support THON. Best case, you get to hear some great original music made by Penn State students.

Relief for Haitian Students

Yesterday the Institute of International Education (IIE) announced a new emergency grant program for Haitian students studying in the U.S. The grant, called Haiti-EAS (Emergency Assistance for Students), will provide $2000 to those who have been impacted financially by the crisis in Haiti, are studying at an accredited U.S. university, and are a citizen of Haiti.

These funds, however, are only available to students if colleges and universities apply on their behalf. IIE requires a campus' International Student Adviser or equivalent administrator to submit applications by February 12. While the University Office of Global Programs here at Penn State is already working to help those affected by the earthquake, we hope they take advantage of this opportunity to help our own students.

If you want to contribute to the IIE's grant program, donations can be made here. Where it says "Direct my gift to," fill in Haiti-EAS to make sure your donation goes to the right place.

Local Bands Needed!

Do you have a band? Do you play more than just covers? If so, SOMA and Movin' On both need you for two events this spring.

The organizations need bands for this year's Arts Crawl and Movin' On. This is a great opportunity for your band to be heard. Both groups are accepting CD and MP3 demos which will be due in the next few weeks.

Here are the important dates:

  • 2/12 - Movin' On Applications Due
  • 2/21 - Arts Crawl Applications Due
  • 3/27 - Movin' On Battle of the Bands
  • 4/9 - Arts Crawl
  • 4/17 - Movin' On

Whether you're a solo singer-songwriter or a nine piece ska band, this is your chance at glory.

Academic Affairs Committee Enters the Blogosphere

In an effort to better connect with the students it represents, UPUA's Academic Affairs Committee (AAC) has started a new blog to keep those interested up to date on their latest activities.

The blog is the brainchild of Sam Loewner, chair of the AAC. His goal is to get more feedback from students who may not be able to attend the committee's weekly meetings.

I think this is a good move on the AAC's part to create more transparency. This body represents every undergraduate student at University Park, and it makes decisions that affect everyone. Just last Thursday it was confirmed that all of those annoying SRTEs will be online by 2011. The committee is even working to possibly extend the semester Drop/Add period. Without this resource, I know I would have had no idea that was even being considered.

UPUA has fought for many years to be recognized as the official student government on campus, and this new site seems to be part of their larger effort to fulfill that role.
