Softball Team Drops Final Game at Nittany Lion Field

It was only fitting for the Penn State women's softball team to square off against rival Ohio State for the final weekend series at Nittany Lion Field. Unfortunately, the Buckeyes traveled away with two victories, including a 5-0 win over the Nittany Lions on Sunday to mark the last game before the opening of the $10.2 million Nittany Lion Softball Park.

After a 3-1 loss on Saturday, the Penn State girls had high expectations for a victory on Sunday, but the No. 19/22 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes had different plans. Riding a Whitney Cooper home run in the third inning, the Buckeyes never looked back while building to their Big Ten second-place standing.

Beaver Stadium in Surround Sound

Attention Big Ten teams! Penn State's Beaver Stadium just got louder.

Penn State is shifting the student section for the 2011 season, and Guido D'Elia, director for communications and branding for Penn State football, believes it will amplify the crowd noise to unprecedented levels. The new student section will sit perfectly behind the south end zone.

NCAA Elects Mark Emmert as New President

Amid a variety of issues, such as basketball tournament expansion, college football playoffs, and hiring of minority coaches, the NCAA Executive Committee finally selected Mark A. Emmert as the fifth president of the NCAA Tuesday. Emmert, the current president of the University of Washington, will be filling the spot left by the late Myles Brand, who passed away in September of 2009. James L. Ish will continue to hold the interim position until no later than November 1 when Emmert will take over.

When talks to replace the late Brand began, Penn State's president Graham Spanier seemed to be a likely candidate. However, Spanier quickly denied the allegations and will continue his tenure at dear Old State.

O-Line Key to QB’s Success

The quarterbacks have dominated the headlines leading up to the Blue and White game, but there are certainly other positions that are going through renovations. Some of those renovations, such as the ones across the offensive line, will be critical to the quarterbacks' success-- no matter who wins that prized starting spot.

With only two full-time starters returning , there won't be one offensive lineman who will be playing the same position as last year. Senior Lou Eliades is shifting down a spot from right guard to right tackle, while the biggest change comes from All-Big Ten center Stefen Wisniewski, who will be stepping down as center and returning to right guard. He played guard as a sophomore, while A.Q. Shipley held down the fort at center.
"I love it.  I want to play there all season," said a jolly Wisniewski after Saturday's game. He seemed quite pleased with the offensive line's performance, rightfully so. The entire unit only gave up four sacks on the day, but the scrimmage rules, which protect the quarterback, might skew those numbers.

Clark Inks Deal With Redskins

Nearly 24 hours after the draft ended, it looks like former Penn State quarterback will head south to Washington, D.C. to join the Redskins. The Washington Post announced yesterday that Washington has signed Clark, joining a stable of quarterbacks that includes the Pro Bowl quarterback Donovan McNabb.

There were rumors swirling Saturday night that Clark would end up in Pittsburgh, but sorry Steelers' fans-- you're going to have to stick with Big Ben.

Clark Undrafted; Quarless, Shuler, Hull Land in NFL

Talk about surprises! The record-setting quarterback Darryll Clark went undrafted in 2010’s NFL Draft, but former teammates Andrew Quarless, Mickey Shuler, and Josh Hull were snagged before the seventh round came to a close. The Green Bay Packers chose Quarless with the 154th overall pick. The former Nittany Lion tight end will have ample opportunity […]
