Blue Topples White in Annual Scrimmage

Spring practices came to an end this afternoon after the Penn State football team took the field in front of a crowd of 55,000 for the yearly Blue and White game. It seems like the quarterback competition, which has dominated headlines, is far from being solved.

It was Kevin Newsome who took the field with team Blue and the first team offense, while Matt McGloin started for team White. McGloin also saw time with the first team offense, but it was freshman quarterback Paul Jones who sealed the deal for the Blue team after lobbing two passes to the corner of the end zone and into the hands of wide receiver Shawney Kersey.

Navorro Bowman Heading West to 49ers

That makes three! Last night, legendary linebacker and head coach of the San Fransisco 49ers selected Navorro Bowman 91st overall in the third round. Bowman registered 93 tackles during the 2009 season while battling a groin injury.

The linebacker should fit in well with the 49ers' defensive scheme, but off-the-field issues weigh on the former Nittany Lion-- a possible reason why he wasn't selected sooner. Bowman was suspended for two games in 2008 for fighting.

Bowman knows those problems are in the past. "I know what type of person I am. I've had so many teammates that love playing with me and love me being part of a team. I'm glad the 49ers see that I'm a good guy, and I bring a positive attitude," Bowman told Mercury News.

Stay updated. Daryll Clark could be next!

Dallas Makes Sean Lee a Cowboy

Tally up another one! Sean Lee is the newest Nittany Lion to be selected in the 2010 NFL Draft-- he has been selected in the second round by the Dallas Cowboys.

Dallas made Lee the 55th player to be chosen after moving up in the draft from a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles. Lee's hometown Pittsburgh Steelers passed on him to select Virgina Tech linebacker Jason Worilds, just 3 spots earlier.

The Cowboys, who employ a 3-4 defensive scheme, will likely play the former Lion as an inside linebacker-- a position similar to the one he played in at Penn State.

The waiting game continues for the remaining Penn State players.  Navarro Bowman, Darryll Clark, Andrew Quarless...who will be next?

59 Years of Blue and White

You say ‘tomato’, I say ‘tomahto’. You say ‘spring football scrimmage’, well we say ‘Blue and White weekend!’ This tradition, which we have come to know as the overdue midpoint between the next football season and the previous, has ingrained itself into Penn State lore just as much as the grilled sticky and the Creamery. Odrick to Swim with Miami Dolphins

It has been a 5-month journey since Jared Odrick played his last game in Beaver Stadium-- 5 months full of mock drafts, pro days, and 40-yard dashes, but tonight all of that confusion came to an end when the Miami Dolphins selected Odrick 28th overall in the 2010 NFL Draft.

Various mock drafts had the former All-American landing with the New York Jets, and he recently commented how the New England Patriots would be a comfortable home. Instead, the Patriots passed on the defensive lineman, and the Dolphins snagged him before the other AFC East rival, Jets, could capitalize. He now calls Miami home.

More on Odrick and the upcoming challenges he'll face after the jump.

White Out Against Michigan!

Folks, mark the calendars and snag your White Out tees!

Beaver Stadium is back in the prime time. Michigan's Rich Rodriguez and the Wolverines will make their way to Happy Valley for some Big Ten football action October 30, which will be the White Out game. The contest, which earned an 8 p.m. starting slot, will be the last time these two rivals meet until 2013-- something I'm sure Michigan fans won't mind!

The last time they visited in 2008, it ended in a 46-17 blowout victory favoring the Nittany Lions. Penn State also walked away from Ann Arbor victorious in 2009. However, this year could be different. Both teams are rebuilding and will rely heavily on their defense. It's too early to say now, but don't expect 46 points on the end of the scoreboard. Do, however, expect a third Penn State victory.

This match-up, which marks the 11th consecutive season with a prime time game at Beaver Stadium, will air on ESPN, ESPN2, or ABC. It will look to top 2005's match up with Ohio State, which attracted 4.435 million U.S. cable households.
