SPA Presents April Fool’s Comedy Month

This April, SPA will celebrate their 2nd Annual April Fool’s Comedy Month and trust me, it’s no joke with some of the acts they have booked. The event will feature several comedians throughout the month that will keep you laughing until the end of May.

“The Buried Life” Cast to Inspire at LateNight

What do you want to do before you die?-- this common question is the basis for MTV's popular documentary series The Buried Life. This Friday, April 1st, the cast of the series will turn this question on Penn State as they speak at SPA's LateNight.

The Power of the UPUA Assembly

If you have clicked on Onward State or picked up a Collegian sometime over the past 15 days, you've seen headlines dealing with one or more of the four UPUA presidential tickets. Since the start of the campaign season, the media focus on the upcoming election has been on the executive branch of the student government. But do the presidential tickets deserve all this hoopla? Do they wield enough power in the UPUA to warrant such excessive coverage? The power of the UPUA is still in the hands of the 39 members that make up its Assembly, yet there has not been one story profiling the any of the 57 undergraduates vying for either the six at-large, 12 off-campus, seven on-campus or one of the 14 academic college positions in the government's legislative branch.

Curtis Drake, Pete Massaro Injured in Practices

The Penn State football team suffered two big blows this week, as Curtis Drake and Pete Massaro both went down with leg injuries in spring practices. Both players were expected to be big contributers in the 2011 season. Drake suffered a fracture to his left tibia in practice last Thursday, and Massaro suffered a torn ACL in his left knee on Friday.

Poll Shows Bard-Lennartz Leading Presidential Race

Yesterday, Onward State took advantage of Facebook's spiffy new poll feature to ask our followers about the UPUA presidential election. So far, we've received 567 votes, which isn't very much at all in terms of the whole Penn State undergraduate community. But for our organization which is only two years old, we think it's pretty cool.

Fencing Team Finishes 2nd at NCAA Finals

For all the successes that Penn State sports achieve, no team comes close to the continuing successes that the Penn State Fencing Team has had over the past 21 years. Since 1990, Penn State fencing has won total 12 national championships and the previous two. (Fun fact: Penn State Fencing's 12 NCAA National Championships equals the total number of championships of the second most successful Big Ten school's entire athletic department, Iowa.) Held in Columbus, Ohio the 2011 NCAA Fencing National championship saw the fencing team looking to channel their inner women's volleyball players and win their third consecutive national championship. Unfortunately for the Nittany Lions, it wasn't in the cards this weekend.
