Political Roundup From the Weekend

Though the state budget has been postponed until March, student government and politics at Penn State saw a whirlwind couple of days this weekend. On Friday, the Student Activity Fee (SAF) Board met, as did the Council of Commonwealth Student Governments (CCSG) on Friday and Saturday. Also at Council were the student government presidents at Temple, Lincoln, and Pitt, respectively, the second meeting of the Pennsylvania Association of State-Related Students (PASS).

Music Monday: Gettin’ Funky

Music Mondays are dedicated to students' love of constantly fresh and bumpin' music. No matter if it's hip-hop, pop or Euro-beats, the staff here at Onward State appreciates whatever can get a party started. Here's your week's selections and playlist to get you through another frigid week of snowstorms and apartment hopping.

Capitol Steps Bring Political Humor to Happy Valley

Political satire group The Capitol Steps performed at the State Theatre last night to a slightly older crowd with their musical quips about current hot topics. A group of five comedians took turns changing outfits, accents, and ethnicities during the fast paced show, never skipping a beat on the political pulse.

Old Main Background in SNL Sketch About College Drug Bust

This weekend, as I was watching SNL, I though I noticed something familiar during a sketch about the Columbia University drug busts. Upon further inspection, I realized that our very own Old Main was being used in the background to represent the college campus. While it's great for Penn State to get some air time, I'm not sure whether I should feel offended or honored. Check out the sketch after the jump so you can make up your own mind.

Obama Speech to be “Invite-Only”

The White House has issued an updated press release regarding President Obama's upcoming visit to Penn State. As previously announced, the visit will focus on energy-efficient building solutions, and his talk will discuss the importance of investing in innovation and clean energy to stimulate the economy. His talk will take place in Rec Hall at 12:15, to an "invitation only" public audience. At this point in time, it is unclear who will be given an invitation.

Red Bull Butters Up State College

The Heister Street parking lot was transformed into a Red Bull-hosted butter cup snowboarding event last night. The scene had a neighborhood, "Hey Arnold" feel. Snow, shipped in from Tussey, was packed into a ramp giving the snowboarders enough speed to hit the jumps. Passers-by stopped, snagged a red bull and watched some snowboarders compete. Those lucky 21-year-olds were invited to an after-party at the G-man for $3 Red Bull+ vodkas. Who knew downtown State College could get this cool?
