The Nittany Lions pulled out a much needed win in Pittsburgh Friday night after defeating Robert Morris (0-5-1) 5-4. Five different players scored for Penn State and goaltender Matthew Skoff turned aside a career-high 48 shots in the win. Penn State now moves to 2-3-1 on the year.
The Penn State Lady Lions are starting off this season with high expectations as they are ranked 13th in the Associated Press preseason poll, the highest of the four Big Ten schools in the voting. In total the Lady Lions will face six teams ranked in the preseason AP Top 25, including three squads from the Big Ten.
Tim Frazier and Maggie Lucas will almost certainly receive accolades for their performances on the basketball court this year, but the two hoops stars are already receiving nominations for excellence in being a student-athlete. The two are nominated for the 2013-14 Senior CLASS Award in men's and women's basketball.
Penn State, along with the Wells Fargo Center, has been named a finalist to host the Frozen Four in the coming years.
After winning its third consecutive national championship, Penn State heads into this season with four key starters returning. With the Alton brothers recovering from surgeries and some weight classes remaining to be set, there will be opportunities to see the rising stars of the Penn State wrestling program.
