
Christian Hackenberg and Sam Ficken earned Big Ten Conference Player of the Week honors for their performances in the season opener Saturday against Syracuse at MetLife Stadium. Ficken was named the conference Special Teams Player of the Week for his three field goal game. Hackenberg is the Big Ten Freshman of the Week after a very strong first career game.

NFL teams made their final preseason cuts on Saturday, as the organizations had to trim their rosters to 53 men before the 6 p.m. deadline. After all the dust settled, 25 former Nittany Lions made NFL rosters.

It certainly wan't pretty, but Penn State left MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ the victors on Saturday night after defeating Syracuse 23-17. Freshman quarterback Christian Hackenberg had some very high highs and a few very low lows, but he was a major bright spot in the game. It was closer than it should have been at the end, but the win is all that really matters to this team and the Nittany Lions are undefeated after opening day against a resectable program.
