Stream Worry-Free: ITS Increases Weekly Limit

Bandwidth_graphITS has announced that it will be increasing weekly bandwidth allowance for on-campus students from 4 GB to 10 GB. The increase will go into effect in all residence halls at all campuses at the start of spring semester 2010.

This is the third time the weekly bandwidth allowance has been increased since its creation. Originally, students were allowed just 1.5 GB. In 2006, the limit was increased to 2 GB, and in 2008, it was doubled to the current 4 GB allotment per week.

Imagine the possibilities of 10 Gigabytes per week. That’s an increase of 150%! Imagine all of the videos you can now watch worry-free on YouPorn YouTube!

All I can say is that it’s overdue… I’m so over “bandwidth violations”. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go back to YouPorn Hulu studying.

Actually, it used to be unlimited until restrictions were put in place in 2001.

  • PSUA

And the original limit was 1.2 gigs.

  • RusswBeck

YES! I am so pumped about this.

  • Mitchell Rukat

Yes!!! Thank you!!! I can actually not be concerned every week with going over!!

  • Mitchell Rukat

YES!! Thank you!! I can download without the rescom monkey on my back…

According to this page, you’re wrong: http://www.rescom.psu.edu/pages/bandwidthfaq.htm#6

@PSUA, if you look at the article you posted, it says the 1.2 Gigs was uploading only. So, the first comprehensive restrictions were 1.5 gigs as Davis asserts.

  • ResCom Technician

This is not official, Just so you know. My boss is one of the guys that controls this stuff, and He hasn’t said a word to us.

  • Captain obvious

That means nothing. Just because he hasn’t told you anything doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. Just means you didn’t need to know.

  • Davis Shaver

We have confirmed this increase with ITS. All campuses, all dorms: 10 GB.

  • Weird….

The jump seems rather large. I would be extremely  surprised to see this actually happen. Who were the sources for this article (if any)? I’d love to see this be true, but I’m hesitant to believe anything about bandwidth.

  • : )

    mmmm. porn.

  • PSUA

I’m saying that was the first restriction.  The blog post makes it seem that the overall 1.5 gig limit was the very first restriction.

    Your Welcome.

ITS Staff informed CCSG and UPUA reps at last week’s SAC-ITS meeting.

Fact of the matter is, we still have a cap. I cannot think of any other large American university that utlizies bandwidth caps.

  • Saucy

Great news. 4 gigs was way low enough that I’ve hit the limit a couple times just from streaming music and movies. With 10 gigs I might actually be able to get a few torrents going haha.

  • Weird….

well the best part is….if you have half a brain and knowledge of computers….you know by now that penn state has a proxy server which circumvents the bandwidth limits and best of all if you actually put some effort in for a few quick changes, you can torrent through it. The bandwidth is meant to keep lazy people from abusing the connections

  • The monkey

    im still watching you…

  • The monkey

There are reasons why you are not told of these things ahead of time.

  • Lani

It would be nice if sources were cited in the article, if possible that is…Gives some credit to what you’re saying.

  • Lani

Run a speed check man, there is a hit on speed while using the proxy.  Kosher if you just torrent, but if you stream anything or video game, it’s quite annoying.  Perhaps that’s just my building or high traffic times, but don’t think so bud.
