Michael Mann To Speak At ‘Onward On Climate’ Demonstration

More than twenty student organizations are hosting a demonstration for climate justice on the steps of Old Main. The demonstration, entitled “Onward on Climate,” hopes to help Penn Staters understand the connection between social injustices and climate change. The event will take place on the steps of Old Main from 4-5 p.m. tomorrow, Thursday, November 19.

Michael Mann, a renowned climate scientist and director of Penn State’s Earth System Science Center, is slated to speak at the event. Mann is considered a leader in climatology, and is a member of the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). In 2007, Mann was recognized by the IPCC for his work on the Nobel Peace Prize winning research with Al Gore and the IPCC.

In addition to Mann’s speech, Onward on Climate’s co-hosting organizations will perform everything from cultural dances to slam poetry. These organizations range from the Penn State Student Black Caucus to United Students Against Sweatshops to the Westminster Presbyterian Fellowship. According to Fossil Free PSU’s Nathan Larkin, this diverse mix of student groups “is mobilizing for social justice.”
