It’s No Secret – Plame Is Homecoming Grand Marshal

plameValerie Plame Wilson is the Homecoming Grand Marshal this year, but you can’t tell anyone… especially not any newspaper columnists.

No longer undercover, the former CIA agent will be attending the Homecoming Parade, an Ice Cream Social, and the Homecoming Game, the Collegian reports. Wilson (’85) is most famous for being exposed as an undercover CIA agent by columnist Robert Novak. The White House was believed to be behind the leak. Prominent Bush politico “Scooter” Libby was scapegoated by the Administration for the event and served jail time before his sentence was commuted by the President.

Her story is about to get a lot more exposure however. “Fair Game”, a movie starring Sean Penn and Naomi Watts, based on Wilson’s book, Fair Game: My Life as a Spy, My Betrayal by the White House will be coming out in the near-future.

Wilson’s duties during Homecoming won’t be as difficult as her previous job, which, I have to assume, involved jumping off buildings, engaging in high-speed chases, and killing bad guys. Actually, I have no idea what a Grand Marshal does, so I may be wrong.

Wilson is a good choice for the honorary position. Anna Sofio, the Homecoming Public Relations Chairwoman, said…

“She really shows the Penn State education going on nationally — making her mark on the United States and doing great things for the country and also Penn State.”

Wilson is honored by the title, and is happy to be coming back to State College, but one other person in her family is happier.

“My son is 9 years old,” she said. “He is beside himself with excitement that he might meet Joe Paterno.”

Let’s just hope he doesn’t make a “leak” of his own if he gets his wish…

Senior Writes Final Column

Senior columns, with all their melodrama and platitudes, usually leave me eye-rolling and shaking my head with a vigor usually reserved for study abroad blog posts. But, as I graduate a week from today, I figured I should give it a go myself. Rather than discuss the origins of Onward State like Evan,  I’d just like to briefly thank a few individuals who have defined my Penn State experience.
