Democrats Sweep Local Elections

The Centre Daily Times is reporting that the Democratic candidates for Mayor and District Attorney won easily over their Republican opponents. Elizabeth Goreham, current State College Borough Council President, defeated Joe Wakeley by a margin of almost 2-1. With 86 of 89 precincts reporting, Goreham had 2,195 votes to Wakeley’s 1,050.

In the District Attorney race challenger Stacy Parks Miller overwhelmingly defeated incumbent Michael Madeira, grabbing 64% of the vote. Parks Miller cited dozens of mismanaged cases by Madeira as the primary reason for her deciding to run. Penn State students can remember Mr. Madeira mainly for his aggressive prosecution of Penn State football players during the tumultuous years of 2006-2008, most notably the botched trial of running back Austin Scott for alleged rape. The case was eventually dropped based on prior false accusations from Scott’s accuser.

We at Onward State will follow the newly elected officials during their terms closely, as both of these positions have strong influences on the Penn State community.

Three Words: For the Glory

When I sat back one night in January thinking about my time at Penn State, I tried to come up with a single word that would adequately describe my experiences here. As I attempted to determine what that magic word might be, my mind began to grasp the absurdity of that challenge. How could I possibly distill four years of my life, countless friendships, and untold numbers of memories, down to a single word? An impossible task to be sure. So instead, I took the easier road and went with three words: For the Glory.
