IST Alums to Bring TEDx Conference to PSU

If you haven’t been to TED.com before, go as soon as you finish reading this. The TED foundation is an organization that brings together some of the world’s greatest minds and gives them a forum where they can present their ideas to the world. The speeches given at TED conventions across the globe are some of the most thought-provoking and inspiring lectures seen anywhere.

The foundation focuses its efforts on its flagship TED Conference and TEDGlobal Conference, but created the TEDx program “ in the spirit of TED’s mission, ‘ideas worth spreading.’ The program is designed to give communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level. At TEDx events, unique talks given by live speakers combine with TEDTalks videos to spark deep conversation and connections. TEDx events are fully planned and coordinated independently, on a community-by-community basis.”

The IST Alumni Society is aiming to bring a TEDx Conference to Penn State in the fall. According to steering committee executive director, Steve Garguilo, “in order to create the best possible experience for attendees, we’d love to have involvement from the entire University community so that we can draw on the talent and skills of committed Penn Staters to bring big ideas, emerging trends, and ‘the next big thing’ to central Pennsylvania.” If you’re interested in getting involved, there will be a preliminary  kick-off meeting held at 2:00pm in room 206 IST on Sunday April 25th.

Three Words: For the Glory

When I sat back one night in January thinking about my time at Penn State, I tried to come up with a single word that would adequately describe my experiences here. As I attempted to determine what that magic word might be, my mind began to grasp the absurdity of that challenge. How could I possibly distill four years of my life, countless friendships, and untold numbers of memories, down to a single word? An impossible task to be sure. So instead, I took the easier road and went with three words: For the Glory.
