Women’s Volleyball to Take Part in Big Four Classic

With a quartet of teams that may remind you of the Justice League of collegiate women’s volleyball, the Nike Big Four Volleyball Classic may be the place to be this weekend (you know, if you’re not in Tuscaloosa).

Four out of the five top-ranked teams in the country (with a combined record of 20-1) will descend upon Gainesville, Florida for this weekend’s tournament which could have huge implications down the road as it pertains to the national championship picture. Penn State, the #1-ranked team in the nation, will take on fourth-ranked Florida in one matchup while #2 Texas will battle #5 Stanford in the other match on Friday. The winners will then meet for bragging rights on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m.

The Lady Lions come into the tournament with a perfect 6-0 record after reeling off wins against Seton Hall, Colgate and Virginia Commonwealth this past weekend. Maybe the most impressive player so far has been freshman hitter Deja McClendon, who has already claimed Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors once in the early season.

This weekend will definitely be a test for the young team, though. This is the toughest competition that most of these players have seen in their careers, but with the experience and confidence they have gained already this season, there is no reason why the girls can’t come back to State College with consecutive wins 109 and 110 in tow.
