Penn State QB Rob Bolden Denied Transfer
The quarterback catastrophe in Happy Valley took not one, but two more turns on Tuesday leading to thoughts that there may be just as many quarterbacks on the 2011 roster as there were during the 2010 season.
Rob Bolden and his family drove to State College from their home state of Michigan to speak with Joe and Jay Paterno about his decision to transfer from Penn State. Unfortunately for them, they came out of the meeting empty-handed as JoePa denied Bolden a release from his scholarship. This decision came as a delight to Bolden’s mother, Tonia Williams, who has come out publicly saying that she wants her son to stick it out at Penn State.
It should be noted that Paterno rarely ever grants a release from a scholarship when a player first asks. Former Nittany Lion great Kyle Brady once asked to transfer to West Virginia, but he took time to think about his decision and ended up becoming one of the greatest tight ends in Penn State history. While Bolden’s father has made it seem like the decision is done, a few days of thought may cause Rob Jr. to see the light. Matt McGloin certainly doesn’t want him to leave.
Twitter became abuzz later on in the night as linebacker Nathan Stupar tweeted that former transfer-seeker Kevin Newsome is staying at the university as well. While it would be a surprise if he stays at quarterback, it is an encouraging sign that the former four-star athlete could be helping out the Lions in 2011.
