Nike Donates $400k to Libraries

In between designing this year’s coolest football or basketball uniforms and supplying Oregon with ridiculous athletic facilities, Nike has managed to make an impact on the academic side of college athletics too.

A gift of $400,000 from Nike Inc. to Penn State University Libraries was announced on Monday in honor of Coach Paterno’s 400th win (a thrilling 35-21 comeback victory over Northwestern last fall that I bet most of us remember). The gift will go towards renovations and technological updates, according to a quote by Barbara Dewey, dean of the University Libraries and Scholarly Communications, in the official release.

Joe and Sue Paterno have been major supporters of Penn State’s libraries for the past three decades and in the 1990’s oversaw the fundraising for a second library, which was dedicated in their honor as the Paterno Library upon its completion in 2000.

Will this mean new Nike Pro Combat uniforms for the librarians? We can only hope.
