Music Mondays: Love Is in the Air
You’ve probably already had your Twitter feed and Facebook page blown up by countless Valentine’s Day posts, so I’ll promise you that this isn’t a cheesy love song playlist to serenade your lady. While some songs may loosely relate to the holiday, let’s be honest: most songs have an underlying love theme.
Whether or not you have someone to celebrate with, here are this week’s top tracks to play to get a little post-VDay action:
1. Fuck You (remix) – Modestep
If you didn’t hear enough praise about this song during last night’s Grammy Awards, Modestep gives listeners a better, more dub version perfect for throwing on a playlist to confuse your friends. Modestep is famous for their dubstep remixes of popular songs, which make them much more party-friendly. This may not be pro-Vday, but hey, listeners without a ball and chain can rejoice when the beat drops after Cee-Lo’s first verse and we find some ladies to dance with. Even more recently, Modestep’s single “Feel Good,” may give you the vibe for a more romantic Valentine’s dance.
2. Me & You – Nero
Only two members make up the drum and bass dubstep act called Nero. The artists come from London, and they have already broken onto the UK independent charts. They’re also number three on the dance chart. This song can be enjoyed without any club drugs and it is definitely holiday-friendly. Add it to your groove playlist for those late nights.
3. Roll Up – Wiz Khalifa
This is the newest single from Wiz’s “Rolling Papers,” with a great double entendre of “rolling up.” Whether you think he’s talking about rolling a fatty or hanging out with your girl, the song is a catchy and fresh. Wiz is no stranger to the area, reppin’ his Pittsburgh hometown wherever he goes. Later this semester students will get the chance to see the local hero at the Bryce Jordan Centerand rep their colors as well. No matter what this song is really about, Wiz manages to keep making hot beats for a hot night.
4. Keep the Car Running – The Arcade Fire
I have to give this band a gigantic shout out due to a shocking sweep at the Grammy’s. They pulled in best album of the year for their “Suburbs” release, stunning other nominees. This song comes from their sophomore release “Neon Bible,” but remains one of their catchiest songs. Arcade Fire’s underground appeal seemed to make it an obvious loser, but in an unexpected twist, the Recording Academy bestowed them with the same honor musicians like The Beatles, Frank Sinatra and Michael Jackson have all won. This song’s lyrics really have nothing to do with love, but doesn’t mean you can’t hear the passion in lead singer Win Butler’s voice.
5. Grenade (remix) -Lil’ Wayne
Now that Weezy is free, he’s dropping remixes like candy and all of his merry followers are thrilled. After remixing Wiz and showing up ‘dem Steelers, he remixed Jay-Z & Kanye’s “H.A.M.” and now his newest verse has been laid for Bruno Mar’s “Grenade.” Mars is the king of romantic pop songs, but adding a little Weezy F. into the mix makes it a whole new story. The remix opens with Wayne’s verse and is definitely more on the poppy side, but it doesn’t diminish the quality of his voice. This updated version of an already great song is perfect for once those VDay candles are lit.
