Bringin’ The Beats to Beaver Stadium

Blue Band Raise Hands

I was messing around on Facebook last Friday (what else is new?) and I stumbled across a post by Penn State Football asking for suggestions on songs to play at Beaver Stadium this coming fall. As a marketing major intending on working in the sports industry, this kind of thing is right up my alley, so I checked out the 200+ comments of song suggestions. Most of them absolutely, positively sucked.

Below are MY suggestions of what should be played at Beaver Stadium this fall (in addition to those that already are).

The Penn State Blue Band in HD – I love the Blue Band. Who doesn’t? But I know that in some parts of the stadium, it’s tough to hear them, including in the student section. Why not mic them up?

Maria (Scooter) – Better known as the “doop” song used by the Philadelphia Union (MLS), I’d love to hear the Blue Band bust this out during a stoppage in play.

Sandstorm (Darude)FOR THE LOVE OF JOE PATERNO STOP CUTTING THIS SONG RIGHT WHEN IT BUILDS UP TO THE BEST PART. It’s not physically possible to refrain from bouncing up and down when this song hits its stride, yet time and time again we hear the epic buildup end with just a lion roar. Time to let the sandstorm loose.

Shipping Up To Boston (Dropkick Murphys) – Another song that makes it impossible to stand still when it’s played. And I guess people liked it at THON or something.

Heart Of A Champion (Nelly) – Corny? Maybe, but try not to get pumped after listening to it.

1901 (Phoenix) – This song just reminds me of a sun-soaked, early-season blowout at Beaver Stadium. Not very intense, but energetic for sure.

In The Air Tonight (Phil Collins) – I believe this is already a part of the pregame mix for night games, but it’s a classic. Try not to get goosebumps listening to that song and thinking about Beaver Stadium under the lights.

Public Service Announcement (Jay-Z) I know that the Philadelphia Flyers and Villanova Wildcat basketball team come out to this song, and it’s easy to see why.

Change Clothes/Africa Mashup (Jay-Z & Toto) – This used to be part of the pregame soundtrack, and I miss it a lot. Or I just wasn’t paying attention. But either way, this should definitely be played.

Don’t Look Back (Boston) – I realize that there has to be some classic rock in here to appeal to fans outside of those who would rather pay to see Snooki than Springsteen, and I think this one by Boston fits that description while keeping the energy going.

And, perhaps more importantly, here are some songs that I hope to never, ever hear played at Beaver Stadium.

White and Blue (Maserati Mo) – Please. No. I’m also refusing to link to this “song” out of principle. This also applies to any other variation of the song, including the Wiz Khalifa original.

Song 2 (Blur) – Yes, this is currently a staple of gameday (unfortunately), as many big plays are followed by the same clip of “the ‘woo hoo’ song”. We can do a lot better than this.

Any form of country music – Country does not belong at a Big Ten football game. It just doesn’t.

Any song by the following artists: Train, Justin Bieber, Sheryl Crow, Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, and Rebecca Black.
