Red Bull Butter Cup Thrills Those Downtown

In case you missed it, or found out about this event the very last minute, Red Bull stopped at State College on their Butter Cup Contest Series tour Friday, February 3, in the parking lot just outside of the Gingerbread Man and Chipotle.

This snowboarding contest scores local athletes on their skill on butter cupping, which consists of gaining momentum riding a downward slope and balancing on either the front or back of the snowboard on a flat surface. In this case, snowboarders have the option of either butter cupping on a mini ramp, an elevated platform or butter cupping all the way down the slope to an upward ramp to perform a 360 degree turn at the top. It’s a pretty simple trick when you think of it; just skim a ramp while balancing on one foot. But that didn’t stop the majority of the competitors from doing aerials and backflips.

Those backflippers did gain some recognition in the Best Trick category. This year’s winner was Trevor Taylor who won a Neff jacket from Skate Penn Skateshop. Here’s the list of the winners in each category and the prizes they won (yes, Prizes!):
