The Penn State women's basketball team won the Big Ten title outright on Sunday with a 74-51 victory over Minnesota. The game was also Pink Zone at Penn State, with 13,849 in attendance (the 4th-largest Lady Lion crowd ever) supporting the fight against breast cancer.
So Wednesday is February 29th, that one day that comes around every four years that makes us wait another day until Christmas comes. What is the purpose of this extra day? Some would tell you that we need it to make up for the Earth's orbit around the sun, but Onward State has decided it's a day to find new music. We start you off on your journey with some staff picks on this final Monday of February.
For 39 minutes and 46 seconds, Jon Graham was having one of his best games as a Nittany Lion. The freshman forward likely wishes he could have back the 11.4 seconds that followed. In that time, Graham missed two free throws that would have extended a one point lead then fouled Northwestern's John Shurna with 2.6 seconds remaining. Shurna made both of his foul shots to give Northwestern a 67-66 win over Penn State.
The Academy Awards are tonight, but if you’re looking for last-minute advice in your Oscar pool, well, we’re not here to help you. That would be far too easy. But we here at Onward State have quite the assemblage of movie buffs, and we figured it would be far more interesting to go around the table for the second year in a row and pick who we think should win. No, our votes don’t count, but they probably should. So whether you’re hoping that Billy Crystal, veteran host, can turn the Oscars into an enjoyable 4 hour affair or whether you’re hoping that Sacha Baron Cohen crashes the red carpet to make things interesting, we hope you’ll indulge us as we walk you through our favorites in film of the past year.
Other than just photographing yesterday, John O'Brien and myself decided to interview whatever students were willing to talk about their State Patty's Day thus far. The interviews took place from 2-3PM on Saturday, and most students we interacted with were very kind (some a little bit TOO nice...).
Fellow photographer John O'Brien and I decided to brave the cold weather and aimlessly wandering drunken mobs to take some photographs--for the sake of never having to use that same balcony photograph for each SPD post. Green is flowing through the streets of State College, evidence that despite evidence to slow it down, State Patty's Day has not been stopped. Check out the slideshow below, to see some of the colorful characters walking around downtown.
