Relay For Life of Penn State Announces Walk-a-Thon Date
The 9th annual Relay For Life of Penn State event will be held on April 13th-14th, 2013 at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Each year, Relay For Life events are held throughout the country to benefit the American Cancer Society. Relay is a 24-hour walk-a-thon that recognizes the fact that “cancer never sleeps.” Students and members of the community are encouraged to create teams and fundraise throughout the year.
This past spring, Relay For Life of Penn State raised over $69,000 for their first year at Medlar Field (In previous years, it had been held at the Ag Science Fields). This year, with the theme of “Lights, Camera, Relay!” the Overall Committee is hoping to double that number.
Ashlie Huss, the Spirit Co-Overall Chairperson, said, “I’m excited to see everybody come together and all of the passion we have for this amazing cause.” She made a point that Relay has already made big changes, like doubling the fundraising efforts for the event aptly named “Balls and Wieners.”
The country-wide theme of Relay is “Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back.” The goal is to celebrate survivors, remember those lost to cancer, and fight back against the disease.
The American Cancer Society gears its funds toward patient services and cancer research. Those interested in participating or learning about Relay For Life of Penn State can do so here.
