THON Distraction of the Day: Atlas Does the “Harlem Shake”

As THON 2013 draws nearer, many groups and committees are overwhelmed with anticipation for the weekend. Luckily, there is a trendy, new meme taking YouTube by storm that one THON organization, Atlas, has mastered as a way to bottle up their excitement into a 30 second clip. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the “Harlem Shake.”

So how do you describe this? Well it’s based around the 2012 trap song by Baauer called “Harlem Shake,” as well as a dance made famous from the music video for “Let’s Get It” by G. Dep, P. Diddy and Black Rob. This new meme starts with one person dancing in a given area surrounded by other people sitting around minding their own business, until the bass drops.  Then everyone sitting around dancing around uncontrollably, dressed in ridiculous clothing, and holding absurd objects. The alleged first “Harlem Shake” meme was posted on YouTube last week and I have to say, it’s not the best I’ve seen but you have to start somewhere.

Now some Penn State students want to get a large group of people to shoot a university-wide Harlem Shake on Tuesday, February 26 at 3 p.m. in either the HUB or Old Main lawn. Could this latest pop culture trend take over the Penn State campus? I suppose we will have to wait and find out. Until next time, here is my personal favorite Harlem Shake:
