Distraction of the Day: There’s a Basketball Player Named Thon

Penn State basketball has its annual THON game every season. If the Nittany Lions can possibly grab a commitment from one high school basketball star, every game can be a Thon game.

Meet Thon Maker, a sophomore guard/forward/center at Carlisle School in Virginia whose highlight tape has gone viral on YouTube, and whose name would make him the perfect Penn Stater. Maker has a name that anyone in Happy Valley would love. What would be better than Penn State hoops winning a Big Ten title behind its star player, whose first name happens to be the same thing as Penn State’s beloved 46-hour dance marathon?

Of course, there are some hurdles to jump over, mostly that Maker would almost definitely never come to Happy Valley when there are much better offers on the table. More importantly, why would the basketball team recruit a player named Thon when his name is clearly a violation of THON’s trademark, as we learned yesterday on Twitter.

Regardless, all of us here at Onward State think it would be awesome if Maker came, not just because of his name, but because he’s absolutely the kind of player that can change the culture of a basketball team. Either way, your distraction of the day:
