Timeflies Freestyles About Canyon Pizza, Disses Michigan and Films a ‘Timeflies Tuesday’ at Alumni Hall

Cal and Rez of Timeflies were given a hero’s welcome last night in a packed Alumni Hall. Fans had waited for more than five hours just to get a coveted rail spot for the latest free show brought to Penn State by the Student Programming Association.

It was definitely worth the wait.

Timeflies’ set list covered a generation’s worth of material. ‘Stacy’s Mom’ during the intro mix, along with several top hits, was just a small hint of what the duo had in store for the crowd. After coming out to their popular hit “Ride,” Cal and Rez brought us all back to the way of the boy band, covering the classic Backstreet Boys “I Want It That Way,” much to the delight of all of our female preteen selves.

Easily the most anticipated part of the night was Cal’s famous freestyle, which he performed with a Penn State theme to Miley Cyrus’ “We Can’t Stop” after being given a one-page list of “Penn State-isms” to incorporate. It included shoutouts to the Waffle Shop, Canyon Pizza, James Franklin’s plan to #DominateTheState, Beaver Stadium Whiteouts and, much to the feverish delight of the crowd, a “Michigan still sucks” line, along with a homage to JoePa. Even THON’s $13 million record was mentioned.

As good as the freestyle was, the Penn Staters in attendance were in for a real treat as Cal only got halfway through the list in his first attempt and proceeded to do a second freestyle to “Space Jam.” This one included a “We Are Penn State” call and response in the chorus and ended in one what was probably one of the loudest cheers Alumni Hall has ever heard.

The two freestyles were almost too much for Cal, as he had to sit down in a folding chair for almost the entire duration of “Swoon” in order to catch his breath. The rest of Timeflies’ set included some of its most popular covers, such as “Under The Sea,” and more of their original songs. During this time, the band filmed the raging crowd for a special edition of “Timeflies Tuesday,” which is dropping this coming Tuesday, March 25.

The highlight of the show was “All The Way,” which you may recognize as the song played after the THON 2014 total reveal. The duo was unprepared for the crowd’s enthusiasm for their newest single, with Cal announcing, “That was definitely the most fun I have ever had playing this live!” After an encore performance of one of their best known songs, “I Choose You,” the duo left the stage to a roaring crowd, announcing that they were heading out to rage until the morning.
