State College Spikes To Open Home Schedule Saturday

One of the most underrated parts of a State College summer begins tomorrow, when the Spikes open their home schedule against the Williamsport Crosscutters at 7:05 p.m. at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

The Spikes’ season officially begins tonight at the Crosscutters before the Philadelphia Phillies’ affiliate makes the trip to Happy Valley. The home opener includes a pre-game tailgate from 4:30-5:30, and will be followed by fireworks.

Other than being a incredibly cheap opportunity to watch a Class-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals on Penn State’s campus, the Spikes offer cheap beer (beers are one dollar on Thursday nights, seriously), a plethora of promotions, and a gorgeous view of the mountains.

And while the Spikes don’t field any recognizable names to the casual baseball fan, many of them have made it all the way to the show, including Cardinals 1B/OF Allen Craig, Oakland Athletics relief ace Luke Gregerson, current Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Jordy Mercer, and recent megaprospect call-up Gregory Polanco.
