Candlelight Vigil Prepared for Michael Brown at Allen Street Gates
Organizers have scheduled a candlelight vigil for tonight at 6 p.m. at the Allen Street Gates to honor Michael Brown, the teenager whose death at the hands of police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Mo., has stirred national outrage.
The event was started on Facebook by Penn State students Laura Shadle and Jared DeLoof. “Please join us in honoring the life of Michael Brown tomorrow evening,” reads its description. “We will have signs and candles, but feel free to bring anything you’d like to contribute. We must stand together in these dark times and peacefully resist the brutality and prejudices in our culture.”
The circumstances of the event remain in controversy. Brown was shot dead by Wilson on August 9 in Ferguson, but a grand jury elected not to bring charges him on Monday night, which incited local rioting and national demonstrations in protest. Some eyewitness reports have said that Brown had his hands in the air when shot; however, in an interview with ABC News, Wilson claimed Brown charged at him and would have killed him had he not fired.
