The Most Creative 2015 Bar Tour Themes

It’s officially bar tour season. If you step into a bar any day of the week, you’re bound to see one come through at some point. Though a ton of bar tours happen every year, there’s still a ton of originality to go around. Here are some of the most creative bar tour themes we received when we asked for your best ones last week:

1) “Have you tried restarting it?”

A group of students from the Information Technology Desk turned their work problems into a bar tour T-shirt. Since the most common troubleshooting question they ask students who come to the desk with computer troubles is, “Have you tried restarting it?,” they put that slogan on the back of their shirts. The front of the shirts showed a grey screen question mark folder, which is what usually shows up on Mac computers when a hard drive is failing.

2) Family Beach Photo Bar Tour

Instead of just making a themed shirt, this group of about 20 friends all dressed in similar outfits — white tops and khaki pants — to visit all of their favorite drinking State College drinking establishments and replicate family beach photos this past November. They even named themselves “The Johnson’s.”

There was some confusion along the way: “Were we a church group? Was this a school function? Finally, people started to understand we were just posing for family pictures,” said member Bridgette DaSilva.

And this isn’t this group’s only bar tour — they try to do one a month and have done six so far! Some of the other great themes they’ve had include: “50 Shades of Groutfit” and “Drinking Like Freshmen to Forget That We’re Seniors.”

3) FooBar Tour

These IST students combined their two favorite things — coding and drinking — to come up with their theme: FooBar Tour. Though this might sound strange to the average person, FooBar or FuBar, is a common function name in computer programming. FUBAR is also an acronym meaning “fucked up beyond all recognition.” The students took that overlap and ran with it to make their theme. Their shirts also included code referencing bars and drinking.

4) Fries Over Guys

As a sendoff for one of their friends who was moving out following graduation, this group went on a french fry tour of State College. It was inspired by their love for Phyrst fries, Dark Horse cheese fries, and Cafe skillet fries. During the bar tour, they even tried curly fries from the Skeller.

The best part is the group ranked the fries as they went along based on categories like presentation and flavor. In the end, the cheese fries from The Dark Horse were named the winner.

5) #HydrateOrTransfer

This bar tour theme stemmed from student Julia Ciamaichelo’s sophomore year tradition. “Back in sophomore year of college, my parents were coming up to visit for a football game and I went out the night before,” she said. “I was texting my older brother and, as always, he was making sure I drank water before I went to bed. And so, I texted him: #HydrateOrTransfer and the tradition was born.”

Since then, Ciamaichelo and her roommates have used the phrase #HydrateOrTransfer all the time, so it was only fitting that they named their bar tour after their favorite slogan.

The band finished its set at the Phyrst last semester and “Build Me Up Buttercup” came on over the speakers. Most people continued with their conversations as usual, but I turned and glanced at at the dance floor. There were my parents, dancing in each other’s arms to the song that they used to dance to years ago at the Gaff.
