THON 2016 Prop Bets

While some aspects of THON will never change, a lot looks different from year to year. From pop culture references to decorations and themes, odds are THON 2016 will have tons of differences from its 2015 iteration. With so much to speculate about, it’s only logical to make a game out of it — or better yet, make prop bets.

Prop bets, for those not in the know, are defined by Onward State co-founder Evan Kalikow as such: “A prop bet is short for proposition bet. Basically, it’s a bet on something not commonly betted upon. For example, lots of people bet on the score of the Super Bowl, but how many people bet on how many times the winning coach will say ‘humbled’ in the post-game press conference? That’s a prop bet.”

Remember: these are not real odds, we made them up. Oh, and, ONWARD STATE IS NOT A GAMBLING OPERATION. DON’T GAMBLE ON THON.

Now that that’s out of the way, here we go.

1. Which of these five songs will be played the most often during THON, and how many times?

  • Sorry — Justin Bieber: 3-1
  • Hotline Bling — Drake: 4-1
  • Can’t Feel My Face — The Weeknd: 6-1
  • Shut Up and Dance — Walk the Moon: 7-1
  • Hello — Adele: 15-1

Justin Bieber and Drake both had huge years, so it wouldn’t be surprising if they have strong showings with songs like “What Do You Mean?” or “Jumpman,” but the two above encourage dancing more. “Can’t Feel My Face” could be a hit for the same reason, and bringing up the rear are two dark horses — “Shut Up and Dance” is kind of old news by now and “Hello” is a slow song, but there are some upbeat remixes out there. Regardless, it’ll probably be hard to ignore Justin Bieber and Drake this weekend.

2. Which team will win the pep rally?

  • Men’s hockey: 2-1
  • Men’s Swimming: 3-1
  • Fencing: 3-1
  • Women’s Volleyball: 6-1
  • Football: 10-1

Gymnastics will be competing elsewhere, otherwise it’d be one of the favorites. Last year, men’s hockey beat Minnesota in overtime before crossing the road and winning the pep rally in dominant fashion, and there’s no reason they won’t do the same thing to Ohio State and the 2016 pep rally. Fencing had a good showing at SAAB’s Lip Sync Battle a few weeks ago so it has a chance, while the other three teams up there are always fan favorites — especially men’s swimming, which has a history of winning the pep rally.

3. At what time will the Bryce Jordan Center close its doors on Sunday?

  • Before 1 a.m.: 5-1
  • Between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m.: 10-1
  • After 4 a.m.: 4-1
  • It won’t: 12-1

THON closed its doors earlier and earlier most years since moving the Bryce Jordan Center once it hits capacity, but last year it didn’t. With decent weather and the ever-present pre-THON hype, it’s hard to imagine that will be the case again.

4. Will there be a high #TimberCount?

  • Yes: 2-1
  • No: 7-1

5. What team will win the Color Wars?

  • Blue: 1-1
  • Red: 1-1
  • Orange: 1-1
  • Purple: 1-1

For no reason other than because we like the color, we’d bet on the blue team.
