Megan Schafer Named To 2016 MAC Hermann Watch List

Hoping to follow in the footsteps of fellow Nittany Lions Christie Welsh and Rocky Rodriquez, Megan Schafer was recently named to the 2016 Missouri Athletic Club’s (MAC) Hermann Trophy watch list. The junior forward and 2016 captain was selected on Wednesday by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

The MAC Hermann Trophy is essentially the Heisman of college soccer. Every year one female and one male are selected for this highly prestigious award. This year, the recipient will be announced on January 6 in St. Louis, Missouri. Schafer is one of 36 on the watch list and one of three Big Ten representatives.

In 2015 alone, Schafer collected accolades such as NSCAA All-Great Lakes First Team, All Big Ten Second Team, TopDrawer Soccer Team of the Week Honoree, Academic All-Big Ten, and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar. She also led the team in both goals and points with 13 goals and 30 total points. Six of those goals were game winners, which she also led the team in. She started eight games her freshman year (2014) and notched two game winners against UConn and Michigan.

Redshirt junior Brittany Basinger and senior Nickolette Driesse will lead the team alongside Shafer this upcoming season. Women’s soccer will kick of its season on Friday, August 19 at Jeffery Field against West Virginia.
