Laura Suero Named Big Ten Co-Freshman Of The Week

Laura Suero was named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week Tuesday following her game-winning goal in a close 1-0 battle at Wisconsin over the weekend.

Suero is joined by Rutgers midfielder Nicole Whitley as this week’s honoree. Classmate Laura Freigang also brought home conference honors after netting Penn State’s lone goal in a 1-1 season-opening draw against West Virginia. Suero has been remarkably efficient in her seven matches of action for the Nittany Lions thus far, as the defender out of Royersford, Pa., currently sits in fourth place on the team with three points (one goal, one assist) this season despite not yet making her first career start.

“Huge contributions from both Laura Suero and Emma Hasco this weekend,” head coach Erica Dambach said following Tuesday’s practice. “Laura, in particular, is just a very trustworthy player, she just gives you pure effort — real blue-collar player, real honest effort every day. [She’s] certainly deserving of the opportunity and has taken advantage of it.”

Suero is one of eight true freshmen to see the pitch for the Nittany Lions this fall, including Freigang, Hasco, starting goalkeeper Amanda Dennis, fellow goalie Sarafina Valenti, Grace Fisk, Becca Hamilton, and Madison Moroi.
