Abby Detering Named Big Ten Setter Of The Week

Abby Detering earned Big Ten Setter of the Week honors Tuesday after leading the Nittany Lions to a pair of home victories last weekend to close out the regular season. It’s her second time being recognized by the conference this year.

Detering propelled Penn State (22-9, 14-6 Big Ten) to wins over Northwestern and Illinois on Senior Night with match-high tallies for assists in both tilts. She totaled 91 on the weekend with 14 digs, eight kills, and six service aces. The Mentor, Ohio, native has firmly secured the starting setter job after battling back and forth with redshirt sophomore Bryanna Weiskircher at times throughout the regular season.

Player of the Week went to Minnesota outside hitter Sarah Wilhite, while Michigan’s sophomore libero Jenna Lerg brought home Defensive recognition. Wisconsin outside hitter Molly Haggerty earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week.

The Nittany Lions will open NCAA Tournament play in Rec Hall this Friday at 7:30 p.m. against LIU Brooklyn, marking the 36th straight season Russ Rose’s ladies have reached the postseason. In total, eight teams will represent the Big Ten.
