The THON 2018 Trivia Results Are In: You Are All Indeed FTK

Penn State, you know your THON trivia. Many of you have taken the THON 2018 Quiz to test your trivia skills throughout the day on Saturday, and the results were very impressive given the difficulty of some questions. As people woke up throughout the course of the day, they did increasingly well on the quiz. Here’s a quick look at how scores broke down generally:

The average score out of ten was an impressive 6.54, but that undersells how well people truly did. A few outliers on the low end of the 1-10 range. Two respondents nabbed just 1/10, but the distribution is obviously skewed left as the median score was a 7/10, which was also the most common score. That’s not to mention the fact that about a third of all quiz takers scored an 8 or above. Here’s how it all broke down by question:

Question 1

The first question of the quiz provided troubles for some, but an impressive 66.9 percent of respondents answered it correctly. “When was the first Penn State Dance Marathon?” proved to be difficult for some. Admittedly, it was a pretty tricky question given that both 1973 (the year of the first THON) and 1977 (the year in which Four Diamonds became the sole beneficiary of the fundraising effort) are important years in THON history.

Question 2

THON has raised a whole lot of money over the course of its existence — just how much is the answer to a different question in this quiz. Back to the question at hand: Last year, Penn State students raised $10,045,478.44. 55.6. percent of respondents chose the correct answer here.

Two respondents chose the total that was just 409 repeating, and in a sense, maybe you’re the most correct.

Question 3

“Before it was known as THON, the weekend was known as…” IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon. Most Penn Staters got that one correct.

Question 4

Question 4 was another challenging one, but a majority of you quiz takers still knew the right answer. You were asked, “In what year did THON become the beneficiary of THON?” As we mentioned before, 1977 is the correct answer and 54.6 percent of respondents knew that.

Question 5

“Before moving to the Rec Hall in 1999, where THON was held in which location on campus?” The correct answer, as a whopping 72.9 percent of you knew, is the White Building. THON started off in the HUB before moving to White and then Rec Hall. Now, obviously, we find ourselves in the BJC.

Question 6

We had some fun with this question, including pairs of players from the 2005 roster as well as the 1982 championship roster. Twelve respondents believed Derrick Williams and A.Q. Shipley were dancing, while another eight believed that Tom Barr and Gregg Garrity, Sr. were going to be on the floor.

Question 7

In 2017, the men’s gymnastics squad took home the first place trophy during the Pep Rally. 57.7 percent of quiz takers knew this, answering with the squad that would win it all again in 2018. We have the making of a new dynasty in Happy Valley.

Question 8

DNCE showed up at THON 2017, much to the surprise of everyone in attendance, setting a precedent for surprise musical acts on the Friday of the weekend.

Question 9

Question 9 was easy for just about everybody. The vast majority of quiz takers knew that “FTK” were the three letters formally copyrighted by Penn State. Now that’s some good trivia, if you ask us.

Question 10

54.5 percent of you THON lovers knew just how much THON has raised for Four Diamonds since the late ’70s. When it comes to Penn State Dance Marathon totals, you should always guess high.
