Penn State Hockey’s Andrew Sturtz Scores 100th Career Point Saturday Night

Penn State men’s hockey right wing Andrew Sturtz became the second member of the Nittany Lions’ century club during his team’s 3-2 win over Michigan State on Saturday.

He scored point No. 100 on Penn State’s first goal of the game after winning a face-off back to defenseman Kevin Kerr on the power play. Kerr then sent a pass over to Chase Berger, who rifled the puck past Michigan State’s goaltender to open the scoring.

Kerr and Sturtz arrived in Hockey Valley at the same time, making the milestone even more special for the veteran defenseman.

“It was special,” Kerr said. “Obviously, he’s in my grade, so I think it’s something I’ve seen coming for a while, especially freshman year when he got off to such a hot start. He’s such a special talent. It’s incredible how fast he got there. It’s a testament to how hard he works and what he puts into his game every day. It was special to be out there on the ice when it happened.”

Although a secondary assist may not be the most glamorous way to score a milestone point, the Buffalo native posted point No. 101 of his career 7:05 after hitting the milestone with a beautiful goal to put his team back in the lead. He took a wrist shot from the right circle that nestled perfectly in the top corner to give the Nittany Lions a lead they would not give up for the rest of the game.

“Andy Valley” will make two more appearances at Pegula Ice Arena this weekend as No. 18 Penn State takes on No. 8 Minnesota in its final home series of the season. The puck drops on game one of the series at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
