Penn State’s Cole Miller Qualifies For U.S. Open

Recent Penn State men’s golf grad Cole Miller will compete in the 118th U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills after placing third in his sectional qualifier.

Miller shot a 5-under 139 during Monday’s 36-hole marathon at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, MD, one of 12 sites that held sectional qualifiers in the lead-up to the June 14-17 U.S. Open in Southampton, NY.

In total, 8,537 amateur and professional golfers signed up for local qualifying, but less than 80 will punch their ticket to Shinnecock Hills. The rest of the field is determined by exemptions.

Miller, 22, nabbed one of the top four spots available Monday in Maryland to accomplish his dream of playing in his first U.S. Open.

Miller shot 1-under 70 in a local qualifier at DuPont Country Club in Wilmington, DE, in May. He emerged from a three-man playoff with a par on the fourth hole to secure his sectionals berth.

Miller finished his Penn State career this spring with the lowest scoring average in program history (72.11), while also racking up six tournament victories in college. The Big Ten championship runner-up will make his second professional start at Shinnecock Hills, which is hosting the U.S. Open for the fifth time.

Fellow Nittany Lions Kevin Foley and T.J. Howe qualified for the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club, with both missing the cut in what would be Dustin Johnson’s first major win.

Miller earned an exemption to the first four events of Canada’s Mackenzie Tour this season, and will make his pro debut this week at the Bayview Place DC Bank Open in Victoria, BC.
