Simone Lee To Play Professionally In Turkey

Penn State women’s volleyball alum Simone Lee will continue her pro career overseas, signing with Beylikdüzü of the Turkish Women’s Volleyball League.

Lee, who recently won gold at the 2018 Pan-American Cup in her U.S. national team debut, announced the news via her Instagram account Monday night.

Lee was joined by former Penn State teammates Haleigh Washington and Aiyana Whitney two weeks ago in Santo Domingo, where the U.S. beat the Dominican Republic 3-2 in the finale after dropping the first two sets.

Lee led the American squad in points during each of the team’s three pool play matches. The outside hitter from Menomonee Falls, WI, was named Big Ten Player of the Year following the 2017 season. She paced Penn State’s offense with 478 kills as a senior.

Lee emerged as a tremendous two-way player for the Nittany Lions, racking up double-doubles left and right.

Lee spent her first professional season in Italy with Imoco Volley Conegliano. She earned AVCA first-team All-American honors in consecutive seasons as an upperclassman.

Lee was a freshman when the Nittany Lions won their seventh NCAA national championship in 2014, sweeping BYU in Oklahoma City. Penn State lost to Nebraska 3-2 in last year’s Final Four.

Nia Reed and North Carolina graduate transfer Taylor Leath will be tasked with replacing Lee’s offensive production for the Nittany Lions this season — Russ Rose’s 40th in State College.

Reed and senior setter Bryanna Weiskircher are the last two remaining players from Penn State’s 2014 national title roster, using their redshirts that season. They’ll be counted on to provide leadership for a young team that features 10 new faces.
