Carolyn Kieger Begins Filling Out Lady Lions Coaching Staff

New head coach Carolyn Kieger announced her initial hires to the Penn State women’s basketball staff, bringing along staffers who have served under her at Marquette.

Ginny Boggess, the Lady Lions’ new assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, held the same position with the Golden Eagles for all five of Kieger’s seasons at the helm. She brings 16 years of collegiate coaching experience to the table.

While Kieger and Boggess were at Marquette, the Golden Eagles weren’t able to pull any top 20 recruiting classes, according to ESPN’s HoopGurlz class rankings, while the Lady Lions were able to secure two during that span (2015 and 2019). The Golden Eagles did build a solid foundation with Boggess, though, helping secure two Big East Player of the Year winners and this year’s WNBA second round draft pick, Natisha Hiedeman.

Overall, that foundation led to success for Marquette, including three straight trips to the NCAA tournament and the program’s first-ever Big East regular season and tournament titles.

Director of operations Pam Brown and director of program development MaryLynne Schaefer also will join the staff from Marquette. Brown spent four seasons with Kieger and the Golden Eagles, handling a number of duties including scouting. Schaefer spent two years with Kieger’s team, in 2014-15 as a graduate assistant and last season under her current title.

Steve Connelly

Unfortunately, former editor Steve Connelly has graduated. Where is he now? He might be doing something related to that PR degree he got in 2019. Maybe he finally opened that sports bar named after one of his photos, the Blurry Zamboni. Or he might just be eating chicken tenders and couch surfing. Anything’s possible.
