Several Penn Staters Take Home Titles In Big Ten Track & Field Championships

It was a huge weekend for Penn State track and field athletes in Iowa City at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships. In addition to several top finishes in various competitions, a number of athletes cemented themselves in the Penn State record books.

Morgan Shigo highlighted day one by winning the men’s hammer throw Big Ten Championship for the first time in Penn State history. Kathryn Munks and Julia Paternain also had successful days by finishing fifth and sixth in the women’s 10,000-meter final. Their finishes put them at second and third all-time at Penn State in the women’s 10,000-meter run, respectively.

Noah Swaby finished third in the decathlon thanks to a personal-best performance in the 1,500-meter run. The sophomore finished with a time of 4:35.17 seconds in the final event of the decathlon.

The Nittany Lions dominated the women’s 400-meter run final. Alexis Holmes won the event, running a Kretzmeyer Track record of 52.17 seconds, while Kiara Lester finished third.

Danae Rivers continued Penn State’s winning ways by taking home the title in the women’s 800-meter run for the second year in a row. Rivers ran a time of 2:04.71 seconds, which set a new facility record at Kretzmeyer Track.
