James Franklin & Wife Establish Annual Scholarship Fund

Penn State football head coach James Franklin announced Friday that he and his wife, Fumi, reached their goal of $462,500 to establish an endowed scholarship fund for Penn State students. The fund will provide a full-tuition scholarship to one student each year.

Franklin and his wife created the Franklin Family Educational Equity Scholarship in Fall 2019 with a goal to “help make the Penn State experience affordable for students who haven’t had access to enroll in the past.”

“Specifically, we wanted to encourage students who are first generation in their family to attend college, are from lower income families, and whose race, ethnic, gender, and/or national background and identity are inadequately represented in the Penn State student body,” Franklin stated.

Franklin added that the recipient of the scholarship must either have “past or present work experience, family responsibilities that include care of dependents, or a documented learning difference.”

Along with the announcement of the annual scholarship, Franklin added that he and his wife are “equally excited” with President Barron’s commitment to making educational equity a priority at Penn State.

“Increasing access for underrepresented populations will continue to enhance the diversity of the Penn State student body. We can’t wait for Penn State to welcome students who meet these standards of excellence,” Franklin wrote.
