Nittany Lion Inn Housing To Feature More Amenities, Cheaper Rates Than Eastview Terrace

The most luxurious housing on Penn State’s campus this fall certainly won’t be the most expensive.

In fact, students relegated from Eastview Terrace to the Nittany Lion Inn this semester will pay at least $800 fewer dollars to live in the repurposed hotel.

According to Penn State Housing’s revised fall semester room and board rates, Nittany Lion Inn residents will pay $3,918 for their single-occupancy rooms. Meanwhile, Eastview residents will need to shell out at least $4,769 this semester.

The Nittany Lion Inn’s rates are also cheaper than renovated singles, which check in at $3,955. Moreover, Nittany Lion Inn rooms are just $79 more than a traditional single.

Room and board rates, passed by Penn State’s Board of Trustees last week, were modified to take this fall’s shortened on-campus residency period into account. Unlike a traditional semester, students will live on campus up until November 22 and finish the semester remotely this fall.

Despite the cheaper price point, the Nittany Lion Inn’s 233 guest rooms will feature more amenities than any on-campus locale. Much like a traditional hotel, each room will come with a host of features including a microwave and fridge, cable TV, Wi-Fi, furniture items such as a desk, closet, and chest of drawers, and a mirror. Residents will also be provided access to their own personal bathrooms.

Additionally, each Nittany Lion Inn resident will be enrolled in a Tide Laundry plan that will accommodate up to 20 pounds of laundry each week — the average amount of clothes a student generates each week, according to Housing. Students will receive more information about the laundry program as move-in gets nearer.

Furthermore, the Nittany Lion Inn will keep RAs on-site and provide services such as mail, cleaning supplies, and board games, among others.

Earlier this month, Penn State announced it would use at least three Eastview Terrace buildings to isolate students potentially affected by the coronavirus this fall. Although the university previously planned to use the Nittany Lion Inn for that purpose, it now plans to use the hotel as an on-campus living space and a home for a few classes.

According to posts on a Penn State parents Facebook page, which unfortunately strictly prohibits post-sharing, displaced Eastview students received a questionnaire to determine their new fall semester housing. The email reportedly asked them to rank a number of potential housing placements, including a different Eastview Room, the Nittany Lion Inn, White Course Apartments, and traditional singles, among others.

Penn State Housing didn’t respond to a request for comment on the survey reportedly sent to displaced Eastview residents.

Although it’s easy to get caught up in the glitz and glamor of potentially living in a hotel room this semester, on-campus residents will need to wait until at least Tuesday, July 28 to receive their room assignments. Housing delayed the postings to give its staff more time to sort out what’s sure to be a complicated process.
