Penn State Student-Athlete Tests Positive For Coronavirus

A Penn State student-athlete has tested positive for the coronavirus, according to Penn State Athletics spokesperson.

Wednesday, Pennsylvania’s Department of Health reported a positive coronavirus case in University Park’s zip code (16802). Athletics later confirmed a student-athlete had tested positive, becoming the first known player to do so.

“The health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches, staff and the broader community are of the utmost importance,” Associate Athletics Director for Strategic Communication Kris Petersen said. “Therefore, as part of the protocols established in the return to campus plan by the Penn State Athletics medical staff and in consultation with University, local and national officials and guidelines, individuals with a positive test have been put into isolation for 14 days and will be retested at that point.”

Additionally, Penn State has implemented contact-tracing procedures to identify individuals who may have been exposed to the undisclosed student who tested positive. Those identified in the process will be quarantined, even if they’re asymptomatic.

Penn State didn’t disclose who tested positive or what sport they play.

Penn State Athletics releases coronavirus testing results every other Wednesday. The university’s next update will be released on Wednesday, July 29.

As of July 10, 178 Penn State student-athletes had tested for the coronavirus. None tested positive.
